Commenting on the ravaged situation of Aleppo during his last press conference as United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon said that Aleppo is now a synonym for hell.
“The carnage in Syria remains a gaping hole in the global conscience,” he said in his farewell speech.
He urged the global leaders and the UNSC to take measures in order to help end the violence in Syria.
“We have collectively failed the people of Syria. Peace will only prevail when it is accompanied by compassion, justice and accountability for the abominable crimes we have seen,” Ban Ki-moon further said.
Civilians in the economic capital of Syria – Aleppo – are stuck in a civil war that began in 2011. Almost 30,000 people have died in the violence.
